Self-aligning ball bearings have a spherical outer ring raceway and double inner ring raceways with automatic self-aligning capability. When the bearing undergoes load-induced bending or when machining/installation errors cause the inner ring axis to tilt relative to the outer ring axis, normal mechanical operation is maintained.
Generally with cylindrical bore, also available with tapered bore (taper ratio typically 1:12). Tapered bore self-aligning ball bearings can be directly mounted on tapered shaft journals using lock nuts, or conveniently mounted on cylindrical shafts using adapter sleeves or withdrawal sleeves. Cages are mostly stamped steel plate type; glass fiber reinforced polyimide molded cages are also available.
Primarily bears radial loads; can also bear small axial loads simultaneously. Self-aligning capability reduces installation precision requirements. Limiting speed lower than deep groove ball bearings; not suitable for heavy loads.
Widely used in precision instruments, automobiles, motorcycles, metallurgy, rolling mills, mining, petroleum, papermaking, cement, sugar processing, and general mechanical equipment.
